Your skin naturally sheds dead skin cells to make space for new ones at least every 30 days. Sometimes dead skin doesn’t shed completely, which can cause flaky patches and clogged pores. That’s why exfoliation is very important. Exfoliation is the process of removing dead cells from the outer layer of the skin using chemical, granular substances, or exfoliation tools.

BENEFITS OF EXFOLIATION

Exfoliation improves the appearance of the skin and helps keep it soft and smooth by buffing away and removing dead skin cells. Regular exfoliation can help prevent clogged pores, resulting in fewer breakouts. It also allows other skincare products, such as moisturisers, to penetrate deeper into the skin. Additionally, it helps even your skin tone, making your skin smooth and soft.

HOW OFTEN SHOULD YOU EXFOLIATE?

Humans lose around 500 million skin cells every day, meaning dead cells build up quickly. However, this doesn’t mean you should exfoliate daily. My advice is to exfoliate two to three times a week—depending on how your skin handles it. Chemical exfoliates are fine to be used more regularly, while physical methods, such as facial scrubs, may be too abrasive to use multiple times a week. People with sensitive or dry skin are advised to exfoliate once or twice a week.

HOW TO CHOOSE PRODUCTS

When selecting products, options are endless. That’s why it’s good to keep a few things in mind.

You should never use a body scrub on your face, as body scrubs can be harsher than those specifically formulated for the face. It can be very tempting to buy multiple products, but it’s best to use only one exfoliator at a time. Doing so can damage the skin and cause side effects.

I recommend seeking medical advice before deciding on the best exfoliation method, especially if you have sensitive skin. Also, exfoliates shouldn’t be used alone; using a cleanser along with other products is very important. DIY products are quick and easy to make and can be excellent exfoliators. They can be used to cleanse, soften, and nourish the skin. Be gentle when exfoliating, and exercise extra caution if your skin is sensitive or dry.
