Have you noticed that your skin flares up when you are stressed? You have more breakouts, and your face seems darker. I don’t know if you know this, but your stress levels and cortisol have a role to play in your acne and hyperpigmentation. Stress has a biological impact on your skin, and the key player behind it is cortisol. Understanding why you are breaking out or where this acne is coming from can help treat your acne and hyperpigmentation better.

Cortisol is our body’s primary stress hormone. It is released by the adrenal glands when your brain perceives any kind of stress. Be it emotional, physical, or mental stress. Cortisol increases oil production, which can clog your pores and increase bacteria growth. It also increases skin inflammation and slows skin repair.

Stress can worsen your hyperpigmentation and trigger melanin overproduction. It can also increase sensitivity to triggers and disrupt hormonal balance. I am going to give you a few tips on how to protect your skin from stress and damage

  1. REGULATE YOUR NERVOUS SYSTEM: When you get stressed easily, you are at higher risk than others. Learn to calm your nervous system by practicing deep breathing exercises, walking, stretching, yoga, or journaling. Also, try to get an adequate amount of sleep
  2. SUPPORT YOUR SKIN BARRIER: Having a strong skin barrier can reduce your chances of inflammation. Focusing on barrier-healing skincare, such as gentle cleansers, ceramides, Niacinamide, moisturizers, and your sunscreen, is non-negotiable. Also, avoid over-exfoliating stressed skin. It can worsen your situation.
  3. TREAT ACNE GENTLY: Harsh treatments increase the risk of inflammation and pigmentation. Use ingredients like salicylic acid, Azelaic acid, retinoids and spot treatments.
  4. MANAGE STRESS WITHOUT PERFECTION: You don’t need a stress-free life; you just need a regulated one. Start small, plan your week, set boundaries, and have calming rituals. Having a system helps reduce your stress immensely
  5. SUNSCREEN IS NON-NEGOTIABLE: UV exposure worsens stress-induced pigmentation. Use Broad-spectrum SPF 60 + daily. Reapply if outdoors and use hats and shades when possible. Sunscreen is essential for fading dark marks.

Acne and hyperpigmentation most of the time are deeply connected to what’s happening inside your body.  When your stress is high, you are more prone to having inflammation and hyperpigmentation. Healing your skin is not about fighting your body; it is all about supporting it. GOODLUCK!
