Some years can humble you. Failed plans and unexpected events.
As we go into the New Year we are, we are dropping everything that is not meant for us and picking new things, and one of those things is regaining our confidence and working on our self-belief to become better.
Rebuilding your confidence requires intentional effort. Confidence is about who you are, not your successes and achievements. To develop unwavering confidence, your self-worth must be connected to your identity as a person, not what you have gained. Here are some steps to help you become more confident.
- REFINE WHAT A “BAD YEAR” REALLY MEANS: Reframing your mind about your bad year is very important. Just because you didn’t get the thing you wanted doesn’t mean that you had a bad year. Ask yourself what went wrong and how you can make it better for the years to come. What can these experiences teach me? How can they improve my daily life, and what did I discover about myself through these? Your bad year can be a way to heal and become a better version of yourself.
- ALLOW YOURSELF TO MOURN WHAT DIDN’T HAPPEN: Unmet expectations from the year can cause pain and hurt to linger. Permitting yourself to grieve what you didn’t receive and what you didn’t have helps you start the New Year feeling complete and free from the burdens of the past.
- SEPARATE YOUR WORTH FROM YOUR RESULT: You are whole and unique on your own, with or without your successes. Your worth is not attached to your success or accomplishments. You are whole and beautiful on your own, and it’s essential to remind yourself of that.
- RECONNECT WITH YOUR PAST WINS: A bad year can mess with our heads and lower our confidence. Make a proof list of all the things you have done in your past years and go through them. This will remind you that you are not worthless and that you have done a lot of incredible things, and setbacks are normal.
- CHANGE THE NARRATIVE YOU TELL YOURSELF: Our inner dialogue is the biggest determinant in our confidence. If you keep on telling yourself that you aren’t good enough and nothing good comes to you, that is exactly what you will become. Change your inner dialogue and your inner narrative, and tell yourself how nice and beautiful you are, and you will see things start to change for the better.
- TALK TO PEOPLE WHO CAN UPLIFT YOU: When we are going through a bad time, we think that we are doing it alone or we are the only ones that have gone through whatever we are going through, but that isn’t true. Talk to someone you trust who can give you good advice and share your experiences and problems with them.
Regaining your confidence is so important in getting your best life and becoming the best version of yourself. Don’t let bad experiences and setbacks stop you from having a good life ahead. You matter, and setbacks will not stop you. GOODLUCK!
