There is this popular myth that African hair doesn’t grow. Wrong! African hair can grow, but it has to be done the right way. I hate to break it to you, but your hair is not the problem; you are!

You have to learn how to take care of your hair, especially with its curly and easily tangled nature, and I am going to teach you an easy way. You also have to be consistent. Nothing you want will work if you are not consistent with it. Don’t expect immediate results and just keep on going.

PROTECTIVE HAIRSTYLES

Protective hairstyles are the best way to keep your hair tangle-free and allow you to apply products and encourage growth. Use low manipulation styles like braids, twists, cornrows and wigs to protect your ends. Avoid styles that pull too tightly because they will affect your edges.

KEEP IT CLEAN

Wash your hair at least once a month with sulphate-free shampoo and a good cleansing conditioner. This will help you remove build-up while keeping your natural oils intact.

MOISTURISE YOUR HAIR THE RIGHT WAY

I have tried a lot of moisturising techniques, and this is the one I think works best: the WLOC (water + leave-in conditioner + oil + cream) or WLCO (water + leave-in + cream + oil) method. Do this at least three times a week. This keeps your hair hydrated longer.

SLEEP WITH SILK OR SATIN BANDS AND PILLOWCASES

Protect your hair at night with a satin or silk bonnet and pillowcase to reduce breakage.

TRIM REGULARLY

You have to understand that the key to having long hair is having healthy hair. Trimming your hair allows you to get rid of dead ends and maintain healthy hair. Trim every 8 weeks, especially if you have damaged hair before. Trimming regularly is essential to get rid of dead hair cells.

BE CONSISTENT

I hate to break it to you, but you will not see results overnight. You have to be consistent. Give yourself time and be patient. You will see the results soon.

If there is one thing I want you to take out of this article, it is this: healthy hair equals long hair. If your hair isn’t healthy, it will probably not grow. Moisturize your hair, learn how to retain your length, and always keep it neat and washed. There are so many other tips I can give, and I will be sharing all of them soon. Hope you enjoyed this as much as I did.
